Pre-loading

WDR perspective on the practice of pre-loading

Also known as “front-loading” or “pre-fuelling”, “pre-loading” is the practice of having a drink or two at home or at a friend’s house before going out to a pub, bar, restaurant or club.

Pre-loading is more attractive for many consumers given the relative pricing difference between supermarket and pub/bar prices.

  • How common a practice is pre-loading?
  • Who does it, how many drinks do they have?
  • Does it vary much by age, gender, region or even type of drinker?
  • what are the main reasons for pre-loading?

In WDR V1, we conducted our own primary research to look at pre-loading.

Here is the summary chart showing how many drinks each age group typically consume at home before they go out.

In WDR V5 we conducted follow up research into pre-loading to find out the main reasons for pre-loading.
