WDR custom segmentation : preferred drink

What do our consumer panel typically drink most often?

Why is this additional segmentation of any value?
We ask this question each month to see if there are any underlying trends driven by the economy or by events in the market.

  • Are we a nation of lager drinkers? (Actually as you can see more of us typically drink wine)
  • How old is the typical bitter / ale drinker?
  • Do wine drinkers usually drink wine when they go out? (Hint : they don’t!)
  • Do people change their preferred drink depending on the time of year?
  • What is the profile of a typical spirits drinker?

WDR research analysis
All the research questions submitted to the WDR consumer panel can be analysed by type of drinker so if you are particularly interested in how certain types of drinker behave then this will be of real value to you.

How can I access this type of detail?
The key findings will be analysed each quarter in WDR.
Any monthly changes we can find will be highlighted; we will also give our thoughts on what it might mean.

Here are three examples of different ways of slicing the data from our August 2009 research that demonstrates some of the high level detail we can deliver from our custom WDR segmentation.

The first shows the preferred drink for each major age group. Notice how wine becomes the preferred drink as we get older, mostly at the expense of lager.
Spirits are enjoyed across all age groups but are more favoured by the younger drinkers.

Here is a different view – much more variation in this analysis; eg some striking differences between men and women (lager & bitter vs wine) and between socio demographic groups.

The third view is by region. Most of us have some stereotypes in mind about the North / South divide or what people in the various regions in the UK tend to drink.
Well, here is the WDR view :
